The book, like the [titular] essay, had the contours of a confession but it was really an elegy. It was a lament for all those fantasies that had the audacity to fade into tedious, heartbreaking realities. It was about being broke in all the different ways there are to be broke — and also the unexpected paths we sometimes take while trying to repair the damage.
